Some of your coworkers may beam with pride as heaping flower arrangements arrive on their desks, while others without flowers will act as if it is just another day. Then there is a third category: some will be embarrassed, and maybe a little angry, about their gifts.

For example, Alice and John are in the early stages of their relationship. John wishes to impress Alice by doing something other than the ubiquitous flowers. He orders three huge helium balloons tied to an oversized, over-stuffed teddy bear for 11 a.m. delivery to Alice’s office. The problem: Alice works in a conservative office environment, and she is younger than most of her colleagues. Alice is left feeling that receiving what amounts to a child’s toy, the size of which could not go without notice, has undermined her professionalism. Regardless of what her coworkers may actually think, John’s gift has not made the impression he was seeking.

This is only one example of a how a good intention could go astray.

"When deciding how to celebrate Valentine’s Day, it’s important to diagnose the style and decorum of the office to determine what is appropriate," says Dr. Peggy Way, adjunct psychology professor at Argosy University, Nashville.

For some workplace environments, Valentine’s Day can cause some level of uneasiness if not handled correctly by management. Some people wonder what is appropriate for a workplace where there is a diverse group of workers, some who celebrate holidays and special occasions and others who do not for personal or religious reasons.

Is it appropriate to send flowers or gifts to the workplace or should they be sent to the home? Is it appropriate to send singing message grams by Cupid and other characters to the workplace? How do you keep good intentions from going astray?

"You should certainly check with your own workplace policies and practices before you make any Valentine’s Day plans," says Dr. Steven Yoho, dean of the college of business at South University. "If the written policy is broad and doesn’t mention Valentine’s Day or gift-giving specifically, I would ask coworkers how the holiday has been handled in the past or even make a quick call to human resources."

Way explains how Valentine’s Day has become more genderless than in previous years when it was more oriented toward husbands and boyfriends giving gifts to wives, girlfriends or potential girlfriends. Today, she says, men look forward to receiving gifts as much as women. She also describes it as a day where people are more relaxed and friendly and want to share expressions of kindness and goodwill.

When workplace management decides to celebrate Valentine’s Day, it is important to ensure that men are included. "Believe it or not, men enjoy getting flowers, candy and other expressions of affection," says Way. She suggests having celebrations where everyone receives a flower, or candy is offered to the entire office.

Yoho agrees that if management is going to recognize employees, it must be equitable regardless of gender. "Businesses will often celebrate Valentine’s Day by having cake or a luncheon because they view it as a day to show appreciation as much as it has been for showing affection."

4 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, chopped
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (divided)
6 tablespoons butter
3 eggs
1 cup white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

In the microwave or in a double boiler, melt unsweetened chocolate, 1 cup chocolate chips, and butter stirring occasionally until smooth. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. In a large bowl, whip eggs and sugar until thick and pale, about 2 minutes. Stir in the vanilla and the chocolate mixture until well mixed. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt; gradually stir into the chocolate mixture. Fold in remaining 1 cup chocolate chips. Cover dough and chill for at least an hour to overnight. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll chilled dough into 1 inch balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheets so they are 2 inches apart. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

Valentine’s Day provokes fear and dread in the hearts of many. The history of Valentine’s Day is a little unclear and there are conflicting stories as to who Valentine actually was. Some historians suggest that Valentine was a priest serving under Emperor Claudius II during the third century in Rome. It is suggested that Claudius II decided that single men were better soldiers and he therefore decreed that young men were unable to marry lest it affect his potential soldiers. Valentine supposedly felt the injustice of the law and continued to marry young lovers in secret but he was soon discovered and supposedly put to death.

Another legend claims that whilst Valentine was in prison, he fell in love with a young girl. Before he was sentenced to death, he sent the girl a letter which he had penned and signed it “From Your Valentine”. This is still the expression used today when giving the traditional Valentine’s Day cards.

Even if these stories or legends are not true, what is indisputable is the meaning behind these actions – love.

In the world of five minute marriages and love affairs, we don’t stop to think enough about love and the great romances of all time. The names of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning, Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall all hark back to a day that we can no longer relate to.

So instead of worrying about which chocolates to buy or which jewellery your loved one would prefer – think instead of what you are trying to achieve. Valentine’s Day is about making someone feel special and unique, even if it is as simple as a Valentine, penned by the priest himself. You want to go down in history and be remembered for being thoughtful and generous rather than someone who closely resembles Scrooge and his dislike for gift giving.

Of course, everyone wants to surprise their beloved with something truly different! They're hoping that somewhere out there, tucked away in a corner of Cyberspace, they're going to find an idea. Something that will make their Valentines Day target really sit up and take notice.

If that's what you're doing, you're going to be pleased that you found THIS. Why? The next few sentences are going to share the secrets of a truly original V-Day gift. It's really so simple that you're going to kick yourself for not working it out for yourself. But we're wasting time... let's get down to it. All you need, you see, is a system.

Are you rolling your eyes and wondering if you've wandered into a staff meeting by mistake? Never fear. This WORKS. For the sake of convenience, we're going to use "she" - but this works just as well for males or females.

== Step 1. Cut Out The Traditional Gifts. ===

If she loves sports gear and already has four pairs of cross-trainers, go shopping at the sports store. If she adores animals, buy something related to her pets - or maybe buy her an unusual new pet, if it will fit into her lifestyle.

Are you beginning to see a pattern here? Yep, "What fits her lifestyle" - that's the key. Let's continue...

Now that you have your list of what she does and doesn't like (you are making a list, aren't you?) it's time to get really creative. Here are a few examples:

She likes jewelry:- What kind of jewelry will have a special meaning for her? Think in terms of where it's bought; any tie-ins with days or dates; a unique way you might deliver it. Can you present it in a way that will never be forgotten? (In the NICEST way, of course!)

She likes hi-tech toys:- Can you add a special song to a new MP3 player? Or present her with a new DVD player plus a romantic movie as a bonus? What is an emotional need? It is a deep desire within you that, when satisfied, gives you a feeling of extreme happiness and contentment. If this desire is unsatisfied, it leaves you with a feeling of unhappiness and frustration. It follows, therefore, that when a husband and wife meet each other's most important emotional needs, they will be so happy and contented with each other that, they will experience passionate love, and stay in love as long as these emotional needs are met.

But, each of us have different emotional needs, and even if both spouses have the same emotional needs, their priorities for each emotional need may be different. For instance, love and romance for most men are sex and recreation; for most women its affection and intimate conversation. Now, if such a husband and wife pair would spend a recreational evening together, show intense affection, with deep, intimate conversation, it would naturally lead to sexual fulfillment. The result? Passionate love, since the most important emotional needs of both are fully met!

What better way to tell your sweetie “I Love You” than with some fresh baked cookies? Give some of these sweet treats a try this Valentine’s Day. Cupid himself would be impressed by these yummy creations. They are sure to be a hit with your Sweetheart, Children, Neighbors or anyone else special to you as well. Don’t forget to get the kids involved! I still have memories of making Valentine’s Day Cookies as a child.

Heart Shaped Cookies
Make you favorite roll-out sugar cookie recipe. Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut them. Bake, frost and decorate to your heart’s content. You can sprinkle them with red or pink crystallized sugar before you bake them, or frost and sprinkle with some tiny candied hearts or pink sprinkles after they are baked. Use icing in a tube to write a message or draw a picture on the cookie.

Cookie Lollipop
Heart Shaped cookie lollipops are always a big hit. Start with basic sugar cookie dough. Roll it out to about 1/8th inch thickness (place the dough between two sheets of wax paper to keep the dough from sticking). Use a heart shaped cookie cutter and cut an equal amount of hearts. Place half a bamboo skewer, a lollipop stick (found at craft stores) or a Popsicle stick on the bottom half of the hearts. Place the remaining hearts on top and press them firmly together. Bake according to your recipe instructions and decorate as desired.
Tip – soak the skewers or Popsicle sticks in water before placing them on the cookies to keep them from getting burnt.

Valentine’s Rice Krispies Treats
Make Rice Krispies Treats and while the mixture is still warm use a large heart shaped cookie cutter to cut them out. If you can’t find a cookie cutter of the right size, draw a heart on cardboard and use it as a template. Just lay it on the sheet of Rice Krispies Treats and trace around it with a knife. For even more Valentine fun add a few drops of red food coloring to the marshmallow mixture for a pink version of the sticky treat.

Cookie Dough Jar
Place the dry ingredients of your favorite cookie recipe in a pretty jar. Write the recipe for the cookie on a heart shaped piece of paper or a valentine’s note card. Tie it with a pretty bow around the jar. Make the glass jar even more special by drawing little red hearts on it with a permanent marker. These are so cute and easy!

Bouquet of Cookies
Bake up some of your favorite cookies. Get a pretty basket and line it with a red or pink cloth napkin. Arrange the homemade cookies in the basket. If you’d like, you can also add some heart shaped cookie cutters, Valentine’s Day themed sprinkles, or some hot chocolate mix. Another option would be to use a piece of floral foam and arrange some decorated Cookie Lollipops within the basket and fill the bottom with Hershey’s Kisses or other Valentine Candy.

A Valentine’s Dinner That’ll Knock His Socks Off

The look on my Valentine’s face when he came home for dinner was priceless and shall remain with me forever. I’d never seen his eyes or smile so wide!

I’d like to share this special Valentine’s Dinner with you now, it had the effect I wanted including an evening filled with laughter and great conversation.

What you’ll need:

A white table cloth

Approximately 20 silver balloons

Silver ribbon for the balloons

Selection of white candles of differing shapes and sizes (unscented)

Several sheets of red cardboard (thin enough to cut)

Blu-Tack or other safe, removal adhesive

White platter for prawns (substitute if you prefer something else)

Small white plates

Ice and lemons for prawn platter

Two servings of French Fries

Seafood sauce for dipping

Bowl for prawn shells

Finger bowl with lemon slices (to wash fingers when peeling prawns)

Red paper napkins

Forks

Small Gold Stars

Ornamental opaque glass pebbles

Small posy of flowers (in case he forgets)

Small vase

Aromatherapy oil burner

Aphrodisiac essential oils of rose, jasmine and mandarin

Cool, sensual music (soul music is great)

Setting the mood and table

Blow up all balloons, tie with silver ribbon around chairs, ceiling, anywhere in the area you’ll be dining.

Cut out as many love hearts as possible from the red cardboard and stick with blu-Tack (or other safe adhesive – read instructions first) wherever you can and where you can easily removable it.

To set the mood place water in your aromatherapy oil burner and add some aphrodisiac essential oils; add 3 drops rose; 3 drops jasmine; and 5 drops mandarin. Light the tea light candle approximately 30 minutes before arrival.

Put tablecloth on table.

Using panache strategically group some candles together at one end of table.
Always use caution with lit candles - never leave the room unattended when burning candles, this applies to aromatherapy oil burners.

Strategically place the remaining candles around the room. (I loathe being a killjoy but please ensure candles are not close to any flammable objects)

Position large white platter in centre of table; shell bowl next to platter then finger bowl with lemon slices.

Place red napkins and fork on top of smaller plates and positioned where you’ll be sitting.

Bring out vase and flowers.

Place opaque glass pebbles around candle display on table and several around white prawn platter.

Sprinkle a small amount of gold stars on table for effect.

A selection of fine chocolates
Bottle of red wine
2 red wine glasses
Red ribbon
Valentine’s Day Card

Tie the two red wine glasses stem up, with red ribbon to the top of the wine bottle and place with Valentine’s card on table.

Scatter chocolates on table

Place prawns on platter as well as some ice and lemon wedges
Place seafood sauce on table
Have French fries almost ready to serve and waiting in the oven
Turn on the music and program to repeat

When I think of the most romantic and breathtaking stories that my friends and I discuss over coffee, we don’t talk about flying off to Europe or drinking the most expensive champagne. The little things like holding hands, reading stories together, and lots of laughter are what we hold dear.

I’ve put together a list of ways to show love — without running up your credit card bill. And, ladies, this list is for you, too. Initiate the following ideas with your Sweetie, and show him how much you care. The ideas below are for men or women and fit every budget.

Love Notes - Leave Love Notes for your Sweetheart to find.

Pampering - Brush her hair. Scratch his back.

Wildlife - Feed the ducks, squirrels, birds, turtles or fish near you.

Having marriage issues? Before you go running off to couples therapy, ask yourself this question. When was the last time I treated my spouse as a friend? Most will agree, the healthiest marriages are based on friendship. Yet, so often couples lapse into prewritten "married people" scripts that are not even remotely close to friendly behavior!

Do you make certain demands on your husband because that's the way your mother treated your father? Do you use the same phrases in speaking to your wife that your dad uttered to your mom? Would you treat your friend in the same manner? My guess is no.

Here are five things married couples do to each other that they'd never do to their friends.

1. Disrespect their partner in the company of others.

When was the last time you poked fun, rolled your eyes at, vehemently disagreed with or nitpicked the way your spouse chose to phrase a story in public? Would you behave the same way if you were out with a friend? For married people, being out in public together often means open ego warfare. This is as painful to watch as it is to be a direct participant. Next time your wife or husband is "being themselves" out with friends, just smile and remember that it is really not a big deal.

2. Regularly break plans.

If you decide to get together with a friend for lunch or dinner, do you back out last-minute? Why would you do such a thing to your husband or wife? Sure, having the rest of your lives to spend every day together may seem like a good reason to be lax about social outings, but think about the message this sends out. Do you really want your partner to think that you take him or her for granted? Do something good for your marriage; call them right now, make dinner plans and stick to them.

3. Nag, nag, nag.

Do you call up your friends and make demands on them? Why would you do this to your husband or wife? 4. Sabotage the holidays.

Unhappy spouses often make their misery known around the holidays. This can mean picking fights, taking it out on the in-laws, or even being unhelpful or uncooperative during the family festivities as "subtle revenge." If our friends were to suddenly show up during an unpleasant Thanksgiving scene, how ashamed would we feel? Sweep those resentful feelings under the rug and remember to be thankful for your husband or wife, faults and all.

5. Forget your manners.

Please, thank-you, excuse me, and I'm sorry are no less important at home than they are when in the company of your friends and colleagues. Treat your spouse with kindness, don't behave boorishly, correct your mistakes, remember your manners, apologize, forgive and forget. Little things really do mean a lot.

Sure, you vowed to stay together "for better or for worse," but why make it worse when it can easily be so much better.
